In his years as Minister for Surface Transport, whenever Pilot visited a port, he made it a point to meet all the workers. He knew that they were the cornerstone ofthe industry and did not always get enough recognition. In his own way he tried to give them as much rocognition and support as he could.

Usually while driving back from the constituency he would stop the convoy to eat at one of the dhabas, his favourite being makki ki roti and sarson ka saag. He was always concerned about the people with him - security guards and workers, and shared his food with them, bought them fruit or tea and made them feel looked after.
